Those who inspire –
Marlene Bernth & Louise Bernth Olsen
Rooted in her own approach to craftsmanship, aesthetics and design, Line Hallberg seeks to shed light on some of the inspiring pioneers who help shape the world of design with their visionary point-of-view. Those who, silent but surely, define our design history, transform their passion into stories that celebrate curiosity and history – those whom Line Hallberg herself is inspired by.
โWith this portrait series, I seek to open the door into the marvellous world of connectivity that we become the co-creators of when we take upon and perfect a historic craft. To honour and evolve the work of past generations and highlight the value of what taking your time, making an effort and creating with purpose and meaning truly looks like, working towards the sublime. Like an ode to those who wholeheartedly surrender to the process and worship the presence in art and design. As a goldsmith, I am a great admirer of those who dedicate their lives to evoke my fantasy and senses through their interpretation and materialisation of a crafts raison d’รชtre.โ

Like a curated window into the past, vintage objects hold a strong presence in the universe of Line Hallberg. They are also the focal point of our first interview that introduces sisters and pioneers Marlene Bernth and Louise Bernth Olsen.
Marlene Bernth is the creator of the acclaimed boutique Holly Golightly, which opened its doors to the public in 2001. A universe that with its innovative and tactile approach to fashion and lifestyle has become pivotal to Copenhagen’s fashion history. Line Hallberg recalls the boutique as one of the first to disrupt the classic retail experience and combine vintage clothing with exclusive brands like Marni, Rick Owens and Balenciaga, alongside more distinctive ones like Rika, who created clothing of old lace tablecloths. Marlene was also amongst the first to retail the fine and high jewellery of the back-then newly graduated goldsmith;
โShe gave me an immense amount of courage and confidence in my craft and universeโ
– Line Hallberg
Today, Marlene runs the lifestyle boutique NUVOLE alongside her sister, Louise Bernth Olsen, who, with a joint holistic approach to craftsmanship and design and a background in sociology, fashion and concept development, has created an oasis of curated furniture, clothing and accessories from all over the world – in the heart of Copenhagen.

What does craftsmanship mean to you?
To us, craftsmanship is a deeply rooted process surrounding time, patience and tradition. The goal isnโt simply to create something functional or aesthetic but to carry on a legacy and showcase love, care and respect for the materials. This also means that inspiration often comes to us in all sorts of ways, whether that being a person whoโs left a special mark, a piece of art that tells a story or a memory that evokes a certain feeling. Inspiration can also appear out of a wish for change, a need to rethink the known and push the boundaries of what seemed possible, making the creative process a continuous exchange between past and present, tradition and renewal.

What inspires and represents you and your creativity the best?
Italy is, without a doubt, very quintessential to our universe and creative approach – especially the period from 1920 to 1970. The art, architecture and design from that period merge so naturally in a way that still feels relevant and timeless, which has this almost magnetic attraction to us. We strive to incorporate this very same aesthetic of architectural simplicity into our work and universe, honouring the Italiensโ admirable approach to craftsmanship and quality – creating something elegant, timeless and everlasting.

What excites you the most about creating physical universes?
Calmness and harmony are the two keywords, whenever we create a universe. We believe in creating a place that welcomes getting grounded and finding inner peace and balance. In a world often disrupted by visual noise and constant activities, we seek to embrace and encourage immersion and being present. This approach is also celebrated in the digital sphere where imagery of calm and peaceful environments often draws attention. Wishing to create spaces for feeling safe and welcome our work goes beyond just aesthetics – it’s about creating a sense of belonging, a place to connect with yourself and your focus.

How did NUVOLE come about and what were your thoughts behind it?
NUVOLE came to be at a time when the world was on pause due to self-distancing and lockdown. It became a reminder of the importance of physical spaces. Despite the digitalisation of boutiques that have made the world more accessible, we still believe in the need for physicality. A place where people can come together and experience the design and craftsmanship first-hand. An experience that can continue out into existence and conversations, emphasising the joy of being present.
NUVOLE is our contribution to creating such – a place for inspiration that embraces tactility and the awakening of senses when presented with excellent design. For this very same reason, we proudly present some of the world’s most iconic brands within the realm of craftsmanship, counting ones like Bonacina, Pierre Chareau, Dusty Deco and the traditional Chiavari chair, combined with our own curated selection of Italian soaps.
We also really appreciate our partnership with artists like Bartels, who create beautiful handmade shoes after old Italian traditions, alongside the small Instagram account Luogoย which showcases a selection of Italian vintage interiors. We regard these partnerships as an extension of our physical boutique and a way of sharing our universe with the world, which is why we put so much effort into curating and connecting with these brands. At times we also invite these very same brands to transform our boutique, which creates this exciting and dynamic atmosphere. To us, itโs all about collaborating and establishing communities, as we believe in helping each other out in the search for creating something bigger.

When were you introduced to Line Hallberg and her craft?
We came across the work of Line Hallberg very early on. Some of the very first jewellery she made ended in our ears and weโve been following her journey with great interest ever since. What fascinates us the most about Line Hallberg and her work is her ability to balance a simple aesthetic with a more playful and inventive dimension to her designs. She is skilled at unifying the classic with the unexpected, which makes for equally timeless and modern fine jewellery. Her approach to craftsmanship and staying true to her creative vision is truly admirable and something we aspire to.

Is there something special you seek to pass on to future generations and their approach to design and craftsmanship?
We hope to pass on a profound respect for the traditions behind craftsmanship – especially in a time and era where mass production and quick fixes dominate. It is important to be critical and develop an understanding of quality and details, as well as celebrate the value of craftsmanship, which calls for patience, dedication and care. We believe great craftsmanship drives sustainability in the sense that both product and design become timeless, lessening consumption and elevating the joy of what already exists – to us and generations to come.
